Summer Jam still a go

The trails are looking good for Saturday's Summer Jam date. A little rain today, but Friday is supposed to be perfect and Saturday is looking at 30% chance of thunder stoms. With the tarps on everything, it would take inches of rain to keep riding from going down. Hopefully everyone makes it out even if the skys are not bright and sunny.

Sunday we had return and new visitors from Pittsburgh come dial and ride. It's awesome when visiting trail riders show up and know exactly what needs fixed, then proceed to dial stuff in. They worked their magic on a couple of lips and landing. The help was very appreciated.

We had visitors mid-week for 2 days from Virginia that are friends with Erin. I'm horrible with names and was only there real quick to help get the step-up roller after the 2nd berm improved for the jam. The main man owns a traveling bike shop that follows national BMX races and South Park is this weekend. Very cool guys and dialed bikes. Plans are in the works for some of the guys to hit up the Heathen jam on July 3rd www.theheathens.blogspot.com and Orchid Footwear and S&M Bikes Jam on July 4th www.orchidfootwear.com. Should be good times both days. Talk to Brad about details.

There is always stuff that need dialing, but in general the trails are better then ever right now. Can only imagine how they will be this Fall. Get to the trails tonight and help dial stuff in. Did I say dialed enough. I need a new word.

Thursday Super Session

Thursday we had some visitors from Pittsburgh make the journey up to get some riding in. Josh, Brodie and Mark showed up around 1:00 or so and Brad and the boys showed them around and got them started. I was going to get out of work early and that backfired as normal. I rode in around 5:00 and got to witness the Mulville show on the Main Line. All I can say is dialed. Consistently hitting tree limbs that rarely get hit. Sweet combos like barspin to stretched toboggans. My favorite along with Chevy's, although he didn't see it. Josh and Brodie were getting thru Main Line and training most of the time. I'm sure our trails are quite a bit different then the standard Pittsburgh trails, since we are basically on flat ground, but I think they a had a good time and will hopefully return for some more sessions and a cook-out next time. Got a little bit of video, but no photos.

The trails saw more riding Thursday then probably any 2 weeks combined all year. Exactly what the trails have needed with the JAM coming up on June 26th. Alot of stuff was riding in and getting smoother as the day went on. Friday had a decent session also that I had to miss out on. Speaking of the JAM, make sure to tell everyone you know. I'm guessing riding will start around noon, although we will be there quite a bit earlier water and brooming. Sunday is the rain date, but hopefully Saturday it goes off. Bring your hot dogs and burgers. I will be bringing the grill down and I'm sure the fire will be going all day also. If anyone knows of anyone that wants to take pictures or do video, let me know. I will bring equipment. The dialing continues.

Last Lip Rebuilt and Ramblings

Last Saturday saw the last lip at the trails that needed rebuilt, finally getting rebuilt. When it was originally built 2 Falls ago, it was sort of formed up and just ridden in. It got a major face lift, finally look proper and is ready to hit to the right hip. Transfer left I would wait a while.

















Brad and I have decided to stop the mass digging (unless it is raining) and focus on dialing everything in. We have focused the last 2 years on getting a lot of new stuff built, because we thought more local riders would be interested and would come ride and help dig. Hasn't really happened. Brad and I are doing 90% of the work and a couple of others help here and there. Might as well make what is good alot better and smoother and ride more, because the trails are definitely not getting ridden enough. No point in killing ourselves making a ton of stuff if no one is going to come and ride it unless the weather has been perfect for a week. I'm sick of the the excuses. The trails are too wet, I don't have brakes, that set is too hard, I'm too busy. Put knobbies and brakes on your bike and get to the trails and work on that set to make it more effortless. I hate the I'm too busy excuse. My normal work week is 60+ hours, still get the family stuff in and I'm at the trails 3 to 4 days a week and digging 80% of the time. Brad is almost as busy and he is there 5 to 7 days a week. I don't know how I started ranting, but I hopefully made my point and I'm done.

On Sunday some real trail riders showed up with knobbies on. P'Simer and Keltner finally made it out from Cleveland to find an overcast, muggy day and wet trails about an hour before they got there. They didn't complain about the wetness. We un-tarped and the 4 of us spent a couple of hours getting them ready to ride and they got a great day of riding in with threating skys the whole time. I was hurting with my wisdom teeth killing me and my body beat from that last 4 days of riding and digging so I enjoyed watching the trail bosses ride. Always fun to chill with the Cleveland guys, see them rip even with the damp conditions and enjoy what we have built.

We are starting to get a lot of requests from out-of-town riders to stop in and ride. Very cool. Always open doors for fellow trail diggers and riders. A Pittsburgh crew is supposed to be coming up Thursday for a session. Should be fun. Green is here

I love this time of year. The leaves are out and providing some nice shade. The ferns are growing like crazy. Moss and algae are growing in places and giving certain obstacles character. Dinger is whipping into tree branches.

The 2nd double roller was changed last night into a single bigger roller. Seams to be alot smoother and faster. Brad and I have been discussing on changing the step-up roller after the 2nd berm all day. Want to make it more effortless and still fun. Any ideas?

There will be someone at the trails all weekend afternoon to dark. Get down to the trails and get your 5 wheel barrows in. If you don't want to dig, talk to Brad or me and we will set you up on the maintenance program. Plenty of work for everyone. Hopefully the rain misses us this weekend and we can get some sessions in both days.

Week in Review

It has been a while since the last post. Where to start. Brad went to the Catty JAM over Memorial Day weekend and met up with the Cleveland and Chicago crew. He had a great time at Catty and got some riding in. He almost won one of the stems back that we donated for the prize raffle, but got some sweet Deluxe grips instead. On Sunday he made it to POSH with the crew and met some of the cool locals. He got some more riding in and got on the road. If you know Brad, then you know he is pumped on trails. Listening to him about his Catty / POSH experience, I would say he is 10X more pumped then normal.



At the Farmboy Trails, the locals were absent all Memorial Day weekend. Everyone was too busy as normal. Not sure who showed up and rode, but everything was left untarped to bake in the sun, then we got the down pours of rain. Not cool. It helped a couple of lips and landing, but in general just created more work for us. Rule of thumb for visitors: Make sure a local is present, un-tarp, water, ride, have a great time, water, re-tarp, pick-up your garbage and come back. If you are untarping stuff, please be carefull. Some of the tarps are getting staked down so you just need to fold them back over the lip or dank pad. If you start yanking and pulling on tarps like a gorilla you are creating more work. Don't assume someone is coming later in the day and will re-tarp everything. Leave the trails as you found them. Brad and me are focusing on getting new stuff built and don't have the time or desire to re-work stuff.



We are thinking about imposing a new trail rule on those that are showing up frequently and just riding. We are leaning towards a 5 wheel barrow minimum dig before riding. Think of it as going to the skatepark and paying your 5 to 10 dollars to ride for the day. I think 5 wheel barrows is an extremely good deal. From Saturday's and Sunday's digging session, Brad, Ben, Chevy, Chevy's girl Megan and me are paid up for the next couple of weeks. I'm not trying to make any of the slackers feel bad (maybe I am), but Megan did more digging yesterday afternoon then I have seen from the regulars. Not sure what to dig, when Brad or me are not there. Ask us and we will set you in the right direction.


No pictures from the last week or this weekend. My lap top hard drive might have died, so no old pictures either. I will get some next time out. Quick rundown of digging progress. Dinger put 6 loads of some of the best dirt that we have on the lip after the step-up in Main Line. I finished that lip Saturday and it looks great. I then added close to another foot to the step-up in Main Line and improved the tranny at the bottom of it where it goes below ground level. Saturday and Sunday saw the last landing in Main Line grow from a small pile to a man sized landing. Brad and me were doing wheel barrow trains to the new landing until Chevy and Megan showed up. I then started shaping up the landing as they continued to import dirt. A couple of more loads on front and backside should have it real close to size. Loads that were more sod were going to the berm after this landing and it is staking up nice also. All of the imported dirt is coming from the field where the mass excavation is taking place for the dip between the 4th landing and 5th set in Geronimo. Friday saw Dave and Cole stacking the 4th landing in Geronimo. Rain all weekend so no riding, but major digging progress.

June 26th JAM

Brad got some work in Sunday on the berm after the transfer set and the next lip and landing. We are both contemplating what to do with Dave's project since he has been working crazy hours.

Squared it up Sunday and got it ready for loads of the good stuff. It will be a little taller and our normal steepness. If someone would want to dump 5 or 6 loads of good stuff at the base of it, the lip will be finished next week. Once I get it finished, hopefully we can get a crew down to finish the landing in a day or so.

Brad got some good digging hours in Saturday between rain showers. Sunday was perfect with the trails being a little moist, but the knobbies hooked up good. Mostly digging and a couple of runs. Pretty quiet with most everyone too busy and not making time for the trails. The trails do not maintain themselves, so show some trail etiquette and help out when you do come to ride.

The big news is that the JAM date is set for Saturday, June 26th with the rain date for Sunday. Probably get started around noon with it winding down around 8:00 pm. Brad has been texting everyone and calling everyone to get the word out. Make sure you have BMX JAM in the subject line and no attachments or I will not reply. Hoping for a good turn-out since the last one was rained out at the end of last year.

The Catty JAM is this weekend and I don't think anyone is going to make it down. A couple of AUTONOMY stems are getting shipped out today for the prize raffle. Brad talked to Fat Randy and Quaggy from Chicago last night and they are already at Catty. Must be nice.

Bucks Trails Jam & Dew Tour Sunday

Word from Dan Parra is that there is going to be a Jam at Buck's Trails in Erie on Saturday, May 22nd starting around 2pm. If anyone is interested in going, get a hold of Brad. I'm tied up with my Mom's retirement party that day and will have to miss the sure to be, good time at Buck's. If you're not familiar with Buck's Trails, check out Square One's video Up in Arms on http://www.bmxmdb.com/ for what they looked like in 2001. I'm not sure what they have running, but if they are having a jam, I'm sure they have some good stuff hitting. If anyone needs directions, let me know.

Around 3pm Sunday I got a phone call from Brad that some out-of-towners were at the trails doing Dew Tour tricks. Funny thing was that Brad was not at the trails and was tied up with family stuff. He got a text saying there were some pros there destroying the place. I finally got to the trails around 4 and got to see the Ridgway kids rip it up. They had been there since 10:30 and were pretty dead from riding the whole time. DK rider / Monkey was going off with some Dew Tour caliber stuff from what I heard. I only got to see a couple of runs, but it was all good. They did a little of filming for DK so we will see what pops up on the internet in the next month. Hopefully we start seeing them to the trails for normal weekend sessions.

Quiet Woods Saturday

Joe's Saturday's Mission:

Permantly eliminate the water hole by Main Lines 4th lip. The couple of inches of rain earlier in the week had the flat bottom covered by at least 2". After drying up for a couple of days the hole was still 8" deep.







A minature version of the Panama Canel was dug a couple of feet deep and nice fine grain gravel was found.











The dam was broke and the water rushed in filling the valley. Once the ditch was full, about 10 minutes later the water level dropped 6". Another 20 minutes went by and all of the water in the hole and ditch were gone.









Mission accomplished. Any future couple of inch down pours should not be a problem.













The leaves are finally out and helping the trails from drying out super fast.

Geronimo's 3rd lip. 6 foot tall and ready to shoot you to the moon. It has hardened up and is ready to be sent when we have good weather again.















Solo digging in the afternoon until Joe T. showed up and smoothed out the Roller Line's 2nd berm and new lip into the 2nd berm from the 360 berm line. A beautiful day to be in the woods chilling out. Too wet to ride, but I enjoyed my digging exercise and no need to think after frying my brain at work earlier in the morning.

New T-Shirt Design

Here is the new Farmboy shirt design hot off the press. With the weather being complete crap Saturday, Brad ran some of these off. They look great! Talk to Brad about getting some in white, black or tan colored shirts.

Sunday ended up being crappy also but the weather broke in the late afternoon. Brad said he and Nate moved some barrels near the bowl and made some real good progress. Weather doesn't sound too good for most of this week, but hopefully the weekend works out as they are predicting. We need a good weekend session, because they keep getting rained out.

The above pictures were from the rained out jam at the end of September 2009. The camera has still been missing when I head to the trails so no new pics. Progress is being made daily, although the trails were pretty lonely this week.. The 360 berm exit was improved mid-week and started to ride in real nice. Heading thru Nate's line out of it towards the 2nd berm in the Roller Line is definitely going to work.

The 4th lip in Geronimo saw the majority of attention this week. Some gutting was done near the tree and before the lip so the 3rd set is now hittable without having to lock the brakes up. With the hurricane winds that went thru yesterday, I'm curious to see if the cherry tree near the lip is still standing. Witnessing Brad and Nate ride Thursday night, I think the trails are pretty dialed with the rain we got this week. Hopefully I can get to the trails this week before it is too dark for me to see and I can get some riding in.

I got some new forks this week along with a new blue anodized Autonomy stem and my bike is the most dialed it has ever been for trails. Brad dialed his ride in with a new headset, pedals and clear anodized Autonomy stem along with some fresh paint on the forks. Brad also dialed in one of the original Farmboy's, Ritchie's Standard STA this week with some new wheels, coverted to a 36t sprocket and flipped the S&M stem to raise the bars. It was funny studying the STA this week at the shop. We estimated that 4 or 5 of today's current rear micro drop outs could be cut out of the STA's drop out. The good ole days that the youngins will never understand.

I almost forgot. Brad fired out some T-shirts yesterday of the Farmboy PA license plate design with the weather being as crappy as it was. He texted me some pictures and they look sweet. I will get pictures up soon. Call him and order atleast 1 of every color now. You need them.

Random Photo Monday

Random photo Monday because the wife has had the camera since Thursday night for the dance recital. I was looking for a photo of the 360 berm, because progress was made there this weekend. The berm still needs alot of work on the exit, but Nate's line connecting back into the 2nd berm in the Roller Line to Main Line saw some work and riding. I found these photos instead and I liked them.

This week saw the 3rd landing in Geronimo squared up enough to hit and excavation of the 4th lip. Brad and Dave were pumped and they moved quite a bit of dirt. Still a lot to do if you want an 8 foot lip, but it is coming along nice. I focused Saturday on getting the 3rd lip in Geronimo buttered up as I was waiting for the rain that never came. It might be one of the best lips I have ever made, besides it is not square to the landing before. It should be hard enough in a week or so to try out. I see some Dew Tour stuff going down over this set if any of us knew how to do Dew Tour stuff.

Saturday saw quite a few riders make it out to the woods. Evan was off the MX and on the BMX for the day. Dinger was looking good and trying some nothings. Scotty was riding brakeless and scaring me and I think himself sometimes. Hoping to see him at the trails more once College finishes up for the summer. Aaron and Duke made it down for the afternoon. Aaron was smooth as always. Duke was chasing him around, drinking nasty water, ripping the nastiest dog farts that would clear the area and packing in fresh dirt only the way a dog can. Nate and Erin made it down from NY for some laps also. The perfect day of digging, riding and catching up with old friends.

Not sure who made it down Sunday besides Brad. Got some good rain this Monday morning that should allow us to fix and fine tune some more stuff. Most of the trails are dialed judging by how high Brad has been going.

Rain Finally!!!

We finally got some rain. An inch Saturday night / Sunday morning pretty easy. Dirt was perfect for stacking the back and sides of the step-up landing. Heightwise we are getting there, but still a foot to foot and a half to go.















Everything was tarped up from the great day of riding that occured on Saturday. Unfortunately I had to miss it, but Brad informed me of everything that went down, although I guessed some of the happenings from tire tracks on stuff never hit before. This picture is showing the lack of rain puddles after the drainage work that was finished last week. Right now there only seems to be one problem area with water laying and we have a solution to that.

From what I heard, Saturday was a ground breaking day at the trails. To this point only the 1st set in Geronimo had been sessioned. A couple of attempts at the 2nd set, between the end of last year and last Thursday night had a couple people wondering if this line would work with out modifying the 2nd set. It sounds like a monkey was found and sent up the tree to remove pine tree branches to atleast 20 feet high. Good thing since Dave plowed thru half the branches last Thursday night and I had visions of him impaling his eyes on dead limbs.

A session ensued that saw the 1st landing riding in and packing very nicely. Once Brad and Dave felt the groove they sent it. I guess Brad's 1st attempt saw him come off of the lip heading towards the biggest pine tree. Casually, he put his right foot out and did a foot plant off of the tree into the 2nd landing and over cleared it by a couple of feet. I guess everyone went nuts. He showed me the missing pine tree bark Sunday and I could not believe the height, because the landing was not far from the pine tree. Dave hit it up next and cleared it no problem. They sessioned it for quite a while and your typical trail tricks were done over the 2nd set. Then Dave transferred to the far left of the landing and was able to go thru the Main Line. All I need to say is that I need to see this in person. Eventually the 3rd set was hit with a lip that had not even be touched since last August. The 3rd landing goes into the ground by atleast 3 to 4 feet and that is were the digging stopped last year. A wall of death if your brakes are not dialed and it sounds like there were some near death experinces. Plans are now switching from other areas of the trails to focus on getting the 4th lip of Geronimo roughly done, so the 3rd set can be sessioned properly.

The rest of the trails rode the best they have all year and the 1st 360's of the year were done over the step-up. Without the rain in the last couple of week, a watering schedule and process with the tarps is slowly getting figured out to keep the trails dialed. Right now, just about everything is running and only a couple of lips need rebuilt. Once we have a big crew together for a weekend session, then maybe a landing or two will get chewed up, buttered up and ridened in. Get to the trails and get you digging in. The Erie guys were a no show, but hopefully they will get down soon along with the Cleveland guys. Pumped.

Crappy Weekend Weather

Saturday's weather barely got into the 30's and it felt freezing compared to the 80 degree plus days we had a week ago. I don't think anyone went to the trails.

Sunday's weather was a little better, but still chilly. I had to get a workout in, so I went to the trails and Brad showed up shortly after. We finished the drainage behind the old last lip in the Main Line. Should not be a problem this year unless we get more then 5 inches of rain in a day.

We then turned efforts towards the step-up landing in the Main Line. We are looking at stepping up another 2 feet compared to last year and we started stacking up the backside. We got it squared up to the current height and are ready to add the 2 feet the next time out. Looks super good and the last lip is looking at being another foot taller. Should send you good.

Weather looks good for this week, so get down to the trails and get your digging in. Hopefully a proper session Thursday evening. No photos of this weekends digging progress.

Christmas in April at Autonomy Bikes

Some days at work when UPS delivers packages it feels like Christmas, because I forgot what I ordered and it's sort of a surprise when I open it. I was expecting the Autonomy Bikes top load stems back this week from the anodizers, but not today. Brad and I were excited to see how the colors turned out compared to the 2nd prototype batch a year ago. Getting them tumbled made them super shiny and the colors I think look a lot cooler. I'm having a hard time deciding which color to throw on my bike. As you can see we have stems available in 6 colors to spruce your ride up. If you have not seen the stems up close, they have a 2" reach, although they look really short. Very turndown friendly back side, with the pinch bolt between the steer tube and handle bars. I need to get them weighted, but last batch was about as light as anything currently available. Still skeptical, if they can hold up to my 270#+ of trail riding and technical ramp riding, they will hold up for you. See Joe or Brad at the trails or Aaron at his new bike shop soon.

Little bit of Riding

What a great day to be in the woods. Perfect temp for building and riding. The plan was to do some riding today, but I was finally ready to overhaul the 3rd lip in the Main Line. It is about a foot and a half wider on the right and the bottom on the left side was shaved for more room getting into the NBL Line. It is a couple of inches taller and a little steeper then it was. Should be a sender and way better in general.

Brad and Joe T put some hours in watering, raking, brooming and smoothing things out. Nate was down to help out again. Dinger made an appearance and a quick half a dozen laps before getting to work. Everything is looking better everytime we leave. The 1st lip and landing in the Main Line was hit up and the fix looks to be a good. The Roller Line to Main Line was looking good. Brad was going high and hit the new 7th lip and landing, along with the berm to 8th lip to step-up. I'm guessing most of the older sets will be running in the next week or 2 and the fine tuning will continue.

Spring Dig

Well, the snow melted off and we had a good productive day at the trails. It was cool, but a comfortable cool. After all the rain we got this last week, we decided to focus on drainage issues. Brad and I gutted out the right side of the 2nd lip in Geronimo. It needed done in order to allow that area to dry up enough to make it ridable after rains. Many barrows of gravel were removed to the perimeter of the plateu behind Geronimo's 1st landing for future plans of filling this area with a new line.

Four New York state boys came down and put some work in on the bowl spine area. They are making progress, but are still digging virgins. We discussed showing them some of our techniques for easier mass excavation of rooty soil. We are just pumped that they are down making an effort and can't wait to ride also.

Dave and Chevy showed up about the time we finished drainage on Geronimo. Efforts were turned towards the old last landing in the Main Line. This area has always been a problem if we get more then 1/2" of rain and shuts the trails down if more then that. The ditch running to the side of the plateu was widened and deepened along with more dirt between the set removed. The landing was stacked up on the back side to form the standard dank pad and the landing widened on both sides to the trees. This landing is now wide enough to land an airplane.

If the rain holds off, Sunday should be a little of much needed riding time.

Did we miss Summer???

What is going on with this weather? Last weekend we were diggign without shirts and this morning I wake up to snow on the ground. Is it November and I slept the last 7 months?

Anyways it looks like it will warm up nicely today, maybe into the low 60's and we should be able to get some work at the trails done. Probably going to be muddy for sure, but we got plenty to keep busy. I have not been able to get to the trails since last Saturday and 2 or 3 good digging sessions went down. Curious to see what got done, get some pics and get a digging work out on.

Come on down and dig. There is plenty of shovels for everyone, just don't use mine when I'm there. The trails are not going to build themselves.The photos above are from The Heathens trails last May. Winter Tarp Experiment a Success

NBL Line progress is showing. Dave and crew have the lip out of the berm roughed to height and it just needs squared up. It looks a ton better this year and is going to be fun. Some more dead trees to cut down and de-stump before the landing and next lip can be worked on.

After picture of the Main Line 1st lip. Same height, just a little mellower. Squared up to look proper and should ride in nicely. This lip has been neglected for years and finally got the attention it deserves. I didn't get a good picture of the landing, but it was stacked up and squared off in the back to form a dank pad and the landing was stretched out. The gap looks a couple of feet shorter, but should not effect the next lips performance.

Here is the 1st lip and landing in Geronimo. Not much going on here besides it looks so much better then last year. We never got the flat before the 2nd lip and the 2nd lip to dry up enough last year to send it properly. It looks ready to go right now.

View from the roll-in direction of Geronimo. I'm glad to see the high corner of the 1st landing did not turn to mud and collapse over winter. We spent many weeks last year getting it to this point and it is not easy stacking dirt a couple of feet over your head.

What an amazing day Friday was to be in the woods. Low 80's for temps and sunny. No shirts required. If that does not get you pumped for trails after the long cold winter that just happened then there is something wrong with you. We are hoping for and expecting a good turn out Saturday to do some damage on the re-building that needs done.

I almost forgot to mention the Winter Tarp Experiment. Our goal was to cover lips that rebuilt last year and were dialed to see what would happen over winter. From what I witnessed last night the lips are as dailed and as fast as they were in the Fall. The tarping of the landings helped a lot also. Plans are to chop the landings top 2 inches of surface, water a little, rake smooth and butter up. I'm estimating it saved us at least 3 to 4 weeks of labor and riding in time. Plans for a jam around the 1st day of summer, to avoid the bottle necks with PA fall jam season definitely seems possible. Experiment was a success.

Bowl Corner & NBL Line Modifications

Overview of the bowl corner / new start zone. The pictures do not show the true size of this area. The bowl is almost 6 foot right now and the step-up exit will be about 3 foot taller when it is finished. Plans were to finish the step-up landing, but the freezing temps left everything a sloppy mess.

Efforts where turned towards the NBL Line and connecting the berm after the tranfer set to the step-up landing in the Main Line. This picture shows the transfer set landing and the berm that is getting modified.

This picture shows the new direction the NBL Line is going to head. The step-up landing behind Dave is where it will tie in. The lip will be beside the step-up lip and it will be some sort of bermed / angled lip. There will be 1 set between these points with specifics being worked out as we dig.

There should be somebody at the trails every night this week with Thursday being the main dig day during the week. The weather looks to be warming up thru Saturday with not much chance of rain until Easter Sunday. Get out and getting some digging in this week.
